Study: Patients with chronic conditions actually WANT to use a remote monitoring device
Patients with chronic medical conditions are eager to wear a specialized patient monitoring device, a survey by the consumer electronics giant Sony found earlier this month.
The findings from the study of more than 2,000 people managing chronic conditions in the United States were announced during the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) Virtual Conference. The goal of the study was to compile insights on the state of adoption and interest for remote health monitoring technology as means of helping either patients who are managing their own chronic condition or caregivers managing the chronic condition of someone else.
While it is no secret that Covid-19 pandemic has propelled Remote Patient Monitoring to the front lines of the telemedicine, what did come as a surprise was the level of interest in RPM by the patients themselves:
90% of the respondents believe they could better manage their chronic medical condition with the help of a specialized monitoring device.
75% of respondents said they would wear a specialized monitoring device IF it was prescribed by their physician.
More than half of those surveyed would consider switching doctors if they didn’t provide a specialized remote patient monitoring device to one that does.
It is noteworthy that the consumer trust lies with remote patient monitoring devices designed specifically for their chronic conditions rather than wearables with health tracking capabilities like Fitbit or Apple Watch: only 28% of respondents said they would trust a consumer device to help track their chronic condition.
The desire to embrace technology comes as no surprise since many patients find managing their condition “stressful” and “difficult” according to the data. In fact, a significant percentage of people (45%) say they regularly forget to take one of their prescription medications or treatments while about a quarter of patients managing chronic conditions say they've had a health emergency because of not continuously tracking their vitals or measurements.
These findings highlight the need for more AI-powered RPM solutions like LucidAct’s Virtual AI Assistant, a unique solution for senior patients who are not tech-savvy enough to pair up the devices with apps, or manually upload vitals data into a cloud. Lucidact’s solution is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly all while harnessing the power of technology to automatically send the patient’s data to the providers’ EMR without a smartphone and proactively alerting the care team when a possible intervention may be needed.
According to CDC, Chronic conditions cost the U.S. healthcare system $3.1 trillion in 2019. Quick to launch and easy to use Remote Patient Monitoring platforms, like LucidAct Health, hold the potential to help reduce costly hospital admissions and acute interventions by allowing physicians to provide proactive, personalized care to the right patient at the right time.
